Virtual Summer Library Program FAQs

This summer, the Jackson-Madison County Library will be offering our Summer Library Program virtually with an exciting new addition - ReadSquared! Through our ReadSquared website at jmclibrary.readsquared.com or the ReadSquared app, you and your family can log your reading, complete activities and missions, and earn digital badges. We will also award prizes through this system. To protect the health of our patrons and our staff, we will not have any in-person library events. We have also modified our hours of operation and the ways in which patrons can use our library. Below are some frequently asked questions and instructions to help you get set up for fun this summer!


What are the hours of operation for the library this summer? (As of June 8, 2020)
Main Library:
Monday - Thursday: 9 am - Noon (Curbside ONLY); Noon - 6 pm (Doors open to the public)
Friday: 9 am - Noon (Curbside ONLY); Noon - 5 pm (Doors open to the public)
Saturday: 9 am - 5 pm (Curbside ONLY)

North Branch:
Monday - Friday: 9 am - 6 pm (Curbside ONLY)

When can we come into the building? (As of June 8, 2020)
Starting June 15, the Main Library will be open to patrons to browse for items and to use the computers during the following hours:
Monday - Thursday: noon - 6 pm
Friday: noon - 5 pm
Saturday: Curbside ONLY

The North Branch will only be providing curbside services only at this time during their normal operating hours (listed above). We anticipate opening the North Branch to patrons by July 1. We encourage you to make an appointment in advance to use the computers to ensure availability; however, we are allowing walk-up use.

Are you requiring face coverings to enter the building?
Yes, except for children two and under. You will only be able to enter the Main Library from the College Street side. Someone will let you in the building where you will have your temperature checked and you must answer some health screening questions. You will only be allowed to either browse for items, visit the Tennessee Room, or use the computers for a one hour session. There will not be any seating for reading and there will not be toys in the Children's area.

Will you continue to offer curbside service through the summer?
Yes! Use your library card account from our website to place items on hold. Once notified, you can come to the library to pick them up. We are encouraging patrons to limit their curbside pickup requests to M-F 9 am - noon. Saturdays at the Main Library will be curbside only; no one will be allowed in the building. The North Branch will be curbside only until further notice.

Will the library be offering any in-person programs this summer?
To ensure the safety of our families and patrons, we will not be offering any in-person events this summer. All registrations, reading logs, activities, missions and prizes will be done through ReadSquared. Everyone who registers on ReadSquared will receive a journal to use throughout the summer, and we will have several "take and make" craft kits to pick up as well.

Do I need a library card to participate and who can participate?
A library card is not required to participate; however, it is necessary to win any prizes because it will be used to notify winners. Parents or caregivers with a library card can create a family account to log activities for each child. If you don't have a library card, you can fill out our online form with your information and then come by the Main Library or North Branch to receive your physical card. Everyone can participate - from babies, toddlers, preschoolers, children, teens and adults!

How do I create a ReadSquared account?
Visit the library's ReadSquared website at jmclibrary.readsquared.com. You can also find the link on the library's website at www.jmclibrary.org under the Summer 2020 tab. On the ReadSquared site, by the login section, you will find the link to register. The first option you will have to choose is to register as an individual or as a family. To register as an individual click "myself" and follow the prompts. Once you're finished, you will be taken to your Dashboard. See instructions below on registering as a family.

How do I create a family ReadSquared Account?
To register your family under one account, adults must make an account first and then add family members. Creating a family account allows adults to log famiy members' activity without going into each individual account. Adults can log other family members' activity on their main Welcome page once they are logged in and can also access the family members' accounts by going to the "Account" drop-down menu at the top of the screen once logged in and choosing "Family Members." From this screen, you can click the different icons to switch to other family members' accounts, update account settings, and add other family members. If you want to set up a family account, click "Myself and Children" and follow these steps: First, create the adult account and select the "Adult 2020 Imagine Your Story" program from the drop-down list. Enter your information and create a username and password. After your setup is finished, select child #1's age and reading program, then enter their information. No need to create a separate username and password as you can manage the whole family under one account. If you need to add another child, click "continue" and repeat the same steps. Otherwise, click "finished" and you'll be taken to your Dashboard. On the left side of the Dashboard, you'll see a dropdown list where you can toggle the different individuals linked on your account. If you have a teen, you can let them set up their own account to manage if you choose to do so.

What if I don't have access to a computer to create a ReadSquared account? Can I still participate?
Absolutely! You can simply use your journal to log your reading activity; however, those who do not use ReadSquared will not be eligible for raffle prizes. You can use our computer lab at the Main Library or North Branch to set up your ReadSquared account, and then you can come log your reading and missions and backdate them. We can help you get onto the ReadSquared account to do that if you need help.

Can I join anytime during the summer library program?
Yes! You can create your account at any point during the Summer and still be eligible for prizes. Some of the prizes are drawn weekly for mission completion or points earned that week, but once you start, you will be on your way to being eligible for prize drawings.

Can I access the program from a smartphone or tablet?
Yes! ReadSquared has an app in the Apple Store or in Google Play and is compatible with iOS and Android devices.

Can I log books in different formats?
Absolutely! Audiobooks, ebooks and eaudiobooks count, as well as graphic novels.

Do I have to read books checked out from the library?
No! If you have books at your home, books borrowed from friends, or if you are using our electronic collection through TN READS or hoopla, you can log those books.

How do I log my reading?
To log what you or your family member has read, click "Log Reading" from your Dashboard. From here, click on what you are logging (books, minutes, pages etc.) On the next screen, enter the book read and the date plus any other required fields. You can add a book review if you wish. Some of the adult missions have a required book review to complete the mission. For those managing a family account, you can actually enter minutes/books for everyone. If you're only entering minutes/books for one person, be sure to un-check the other names listed at the bottom on the window. Hit submit and you are finished. If you read aloud to more than one child, you can keep the boxes checked for the children that participated. We ask that you only log items completed during the program period.

How do I find my activity history?
Click on the "Logging History" tab to view your reading log, reviews written, missions (click "other") and any prizes you have won. Note that on your reading log, you can change details like adding books to your logged minutes, but you cannot delete or alter minutes entered. If you have made a mistake and you need your log adjusted, contact us and we will take care of that for you.

What are badges and where can I see the ones that I have earned?
Badges are awarded for levels reached and missions completed. Click on the "My Badges" button on the right side of the Dashboard to see what badges you have earned. To see opportunities for earning additional badges, click on the "Missions" tab. Completing a badge does not necessarily mean you have won a prize. Prizes will be awarded in random drawings for badge categories.

What are missions?
Missions are extra challenges that can earn you badges and points as well as entries for special prizes. Some require simply checking that you have completed the mission, while others require you to enter text or upload photos or secret codes. On the Missions tab, you'll see a list of these challenges and their descriptions, badges, and how many activities it takes to complete them. Click on any mission to see more details. Once you've completed the mission you will receive a badge. You'll be notified in your messages if you have won a raffle drawing and prizes can be picked up at the Main Library. New missions will be added throughout the summer, so log in regularly and check the missions for new ones.

What prizes can I earn?
ReadSquared allows us to award prizes for points earned or missions completed. The system automatically selects a winner based upon the parameters we set for that prize. We will be awarding prizes throughout the summer and we will have a grand prize for each age category at the end of the summer. The grand prize winners will be announced by a special video message from Mayor Scott Conger! If you win a prize, you will be notified in your messages section and you must come to the Main Library by July 31 to claim your prize.

How do I get a secret code?
If there is an activity where you can get a secret code, that will be explained in that mission and the library will send you that code to enter into that mission. Throughout the summer, we may also offer secret codes for watching videos and the secret code will be shared at the end.

How do I play the games?
Log into your account and click on the "Games" button on the right hand side of your Dashboard. As points are earned, more games will be unlocked. No points are earned for playing the games - they are just for fun!

I forgot my password or username. How can I retrieve it?
If you entered your email address when you registered, you can retrieve your password via email. If you did not enter an email address, our technology staff can help you change your password. Staff can help you retrieve your username. Call 731-425-8600.

How many points do I need to earn my summer reading program certificate?
To earn a completion certificate and be entered into the grand prize drawing, each age category will need to earn 1,000 points. You can continue earning points and completing missions once you reach 1,000. If you cannot print your certificate at home, you may come to the library and we will print it out for you.
