How it Works

Summer Reading is based on “Adventure” this year! That means that we’re encouraging you to go on adventures and do something new!
Every time you do certain tasks between June 1st and July 26th, you can earn badges for them. Bring your adventure log (in the back of this program guide) to the desk to get one entry per badge for our prizes at the end of the summer!
Next to the badges, write down a log of what you have done to achieve that badge so the library knows what adventures you’ve been on!
Reading badges are earned for reading books. Every book you read or listen to will count toward this badge, no matter what format it is in!
Library badges are earned for every time you come to a library event. We have so much going on, at the library and elsewhere, too!
Exploration badges are earned when you do something out of the ordinary. Going to the park, hiking, going on a shopping trip, or vacation all count!
New Thing badges are earned whenever you do something new. It could be trying a new type of food, doing a new craft, or anything you’ve never done before!

FAQ

What is the Summer Reading Program?
Every summer, the library provides a ton of new and unique programs for all ages. These help to foster literacy for students during the “summer slide” months, encourage adults to read more, and create a sense of community through fun activities. Every year, the SRP theme is different, and this year, it is “Adventure Begins at Your Library”!
How do I participate in Summer Reading?
Just get a Program Guide for the age group you need! We have Toddler/Pre-K, Kids, Teen, and Adult. Inside, you’ll find all of our events, as well as your reading logs or adventure trackers! You choose which age group is appropriate for you or your child(ren). No registration required, no library card needed, and events are free!
How long does the Summer Reading Program last?
Summer Reading starts on June 1st. Our finale event is on July 26th, where we will have campfire songs, snacks, activities, and more to wrap up the summer!
Can I/my child read anything I/they want to read for Summer Reading?
Yes! Anything you read (or listen to if you prefer audiobooks) will count toward Summer Reading. This is all based on the honor system.
What about prizes?
For Toddlers/Pre-K and Kids, children will receive some treats from around the world to honor our theme of “adventure”. Just come and show us your reading log for your prize! For Teens and Adults, finishing badges in your adventure log will get you entries for drawings for some great prizes at the end of Summer Reading. These could be tickets to local events like the Jackson Symphony, exciting adventures at some local businesses, and more! Just get someone at the front desk sign off on your adventure log to claim your entries.
What are Brag Tags and how do I get them?
Brag tags are little dog tags to add to a keychain for any of our children and teen patrons. All you have to do is read one of the books from the Brag Tag list and let the front desk know when you have finished it. You cannot renew any of our Brag Tag books during Summer Reading, just so we can ensure that others can enjoy them, too!

Thank you to our partners & sponsors for making Summer Reading possible!
